Succulent Care

How to care for succulents in an open terrarium

Caring for succulents in an open terrarium requires attention to their unique needs to thrive in a well-ventilated environment. Here are some tips to care for your succulents in an open terrarium:

  1. Soil: The well-draining soil mix specifically formulated for succulents and cacti. Avoid regular potting soil, as it retains too much moisture, increasing the risk of root rot.

  2. Watering: Succulents are drought-resistant plants, so water them sparingly. Check the soil's moisture level before watering by inserting your finger about an inch deep into the soil. Only water when the soil is completely dry. When watering, water the soil directly, not the plant's leaves, to prevent rot.

  3. Sunlight: Place your open terrarium in a location that receives bright, indirect sunlight. Succulents need ample light to grow and maintain their compact, vibrant appearance. Avoid placing them in direct sunlight for extended periods, as they may get scorched.

  4. Ventilation: The open terrarium design already provides some ventilation, but it's essential to ensure there is adequate air circulation in the room or area where the terrarium is kept. Good ventilation will help prevent excess moisture buildup.

  5. Temperature: Succulents generally prefer moderate to warm temperatures. Most varieties can handle a wide range of temperatures, but avoid exposing them to extreme cold or heat.

  6. Pruning: As succulents grow, you may need to trim back leggy or stretched-out stems to encourage a compact and attractive shape. Use clean, sharp scissors or pruning shears for this purpose.

  7. Fertilisation: Limit use to inhabit growth of your plants. During the growing season (typically spring and summer), you can fertilise your succulents with a balanced, diluted liquid fertiliser. However, they can survive without frequent fertilisation.

  8. Pest control: Keep an eye out for any signs of pests, such as mealybugs or aphids. If you spot pests, isolate the affected plant and use an appropriate organic insecticidal soap to treat the infestation.

  9. Repotting: As your succulents grow, they may outgrow the terrarium. When this happens, carefully transplant them into a slightly larger container using fresh succulent soil.

Remember that every succulent species may have specific care requirements, so it's essential to identify the types of succulents you have in your open terrarium and tailor the care accordingly. With the right care, your succulents can thrive and beautify your open terrarium for a long time.
