How to care for your Cacti Open Terrarium
Cacti open terrariums can be a striking and low-maintenance way to showcase these unique desert plants. Since the terrarium is already made, you'll need to focus on maintaining the cacti inside. Here are some specific tips for caring for cacti in an open terrarium:
Sunlight: Cacti thrive in bright, direct sunlight. Place the open terrarium in a location where it receives at least 4-6 hours of sunlight daily. A sunny windowsill or a spot near a south-facing window can be ideal for cacti.
Soil: Cacti prefer well-draining soil to prevent waterlogged conditions. The soil mix should be formulated specifically for cacti and succulents. If the terrarium's soil appears compacted or retains too much moisture, consider repotting the cacti with fresh, well-draining soil.
Watering: Cacti are drought-resistant and require infrequent watering. Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Typically, cacti in an open terrarium will need water every 2-4 weeks, depending on the environmental conditions. If the terrarium has drainage holes, use the "soak and dry" method – thoroughly water the soil and let excess water drain away. Avoid watering the cacti too frequently to prevent root rot.
Ventilation: Since it's an open terrarium, it should already provide sufficient ventilation for the cacti. Good airflow helps prevent excess moisture from accumulating, which can be harmful to cacti.
Temperature: Cacti prefer warm temperatures during their active growing season. Ensure the room temperature remains within their preferred range, typically around 21-32°C.
Fertilization: Cacti have low nutrient requirements, and too much fertiliser can be detrimental. During their growing season (spring and summer), you can apply a diluted, balanced liquid fertiliser once every 4-6 weeks. However, it's not strictly necessary, and cacti can survive without frequent fertilisation.
Pruning: Remove any dead or decaying parts of the cacti as needed to maintain their health and appearance. Be cautious when handling cacti to avoid getting pricked by their spines.
Sunlight exposure: Rotate the terrarium occasionally to ensure all sides of the cacti receive adequate sunlight. This will help maintain even growth and prevent the plants from leaning toward the light source.
Repotting: If the cacti outgrow the terrarium or become root-bound, consider repotting them into larger containers with fresh soil. This is usually not required very often, as cacti grow slowly.
Monitor for pests: Occasionally check the cacti for signs of pests, such as mealybugs or spider mites. If you notice any infestations, isolate the affected cactus and treat it with appropriate organic pest control methods.
